How To Know Where We Will Spend Eternity When We Die

What the Bible says about how to spend eternity in Heaven.

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life…” – 1 John 5:13

It is possible to know that we will live eternally with God in Heaven. There are four key things we need to understand and believe in order to have eternal life.

We all have sinned.

“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23

God’s Word reminds us that we all have sinned. We have all fallen short of God’s requirements, for at one time or another, we have all deliberately chosen to disobey God.

There is a price for sin.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” – Romans 6:23

A wage is a payment. The payment for our sin is death and separation from God in a place that the Bible calls Hell.

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” – Revelation 20:14

The Bible explains that there are two deaths: a physical death we must all endure and a spiritual death that we can escape.

Jesus paid the price.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

The word “commendeth” means proved. God proved His love for us by giving His own Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins. The required price for our sin was covered by the blood of Jesus so we would not have to pay the price with our own lives.

It is a free gift offered to every man, woman, and child. We must simply choose to put our faith and trust in Jesus and His sacrifice of love.

We must believe in Jesus.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” – Romans 10:9

To believe on Jesus Christ as Saviour means to believe that we are a sinner with no hope; to believe that Jesus died a death of love on the cross to pay the payment for our sin that we could never pay; and to believe that Jesus is the only way to Heaven. When we come to this realization, we can express our belief on Jesus by calling on Him in prayer:

“Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. Please forgive me for my sin. I believe that You died on the cross and rose from the dead to pay the penalty for my sin. I am placing my faith in You alone to forgive sins and save me. Thank You for giving me eternal life. In Jesus’s name, Amen.”
